Continuing our series on the impact that technology has on our marriages, this week we are talking about boundaries and tech! Establishing boundaries is paramount in maintaining a healthy balance between technology and our marriages. It is crucial for couples to have open and honest conversations about their expectations and concerns regarding technology use. By setting mutually agreed-upon boundaries, you and your spouse can create a safe and nurturing environment where our marriage takes center stage.

Designating device-free zones or times within the daily routine is an effective way to reclaim quality time and undivided attention for one another. For example, you both can agree to keep smartphones out of the bedroom, creating a space that is free from distractions and solely dedicated to intimacy, rest, and rejuvenation. By reserving this sacred space, you will foster deeper emotional connections.

Jay and I have established a boundary for putting phones away at the end of the day. Our devices go in the charging station - which is in the kitchen- at 9 pm everyday. We do have one exception to the rule, we have a phone that charges in our bedroom in case of emergencies but the setting for "do not disturb" is on for only our favorites. Which means that our kids or family can get ahold of us in case of emergency in the middle of the night.

In addition to device-free zones, you and your spouse can establish specific times during the day when technology takes a backseat. This could involve setting aside uninterrupted meal times where phones are stowed away, allowing you to engage in meaningful conversations. Similarly, you can designate an evening hour before bedtime as a "tech-free zone," allowing for winding down, engaging in shared activities, or simply enjoying each other's company without the interference of screens.

By creating these boundaries, you send a clear message to one another that your relationship and emotional well-being take precedence over the constant lure of technology. It allows you both to be focused and present, enabling you to truly listen and understand each other.

It is important to note that these boundaries should be mutually agreed upon and tailored to the unique needs and dynamics of your marriage. Open communication and flexibility are key to finding a balance that works for both of you. It may be helpful to periodically revisit and reassess these boundaries as circumstances and needs evolve, ensuring that they continue to serve the purpose of nurturing the marriage.

Remember, setting boundaries is not about restricting or controlling each other's actions but rather about creating an environment that prioritizes the well-being of the marriage. By establishing these boundaries, you regain control over the intrusion of technology and create space for genuine connection, understanding, and love to flourish.
