In the last of our blog series on balancing life and marriage in a chaotic world, today we are going to talk about seeking support.

Seeking support is a crucial step in managing the complexities of a busy life and a marriage. It's important to remember that you don't have to face all the challenges alone. By reaching out to friends, family members, or a professional counselor, you can gain valuable insights, guidance, and emotional support to navigate through difficult times. However, we do want to add that seeking support is not about "spouse bashing". It is about learning from others and their experience in navigation marriage in this busy world.

Here are a few reasons why seeking support is beneficial:

  1. Emotional support: Sharing your feelings and concerns with someone you trust can provide a much-needed outlet for emotional release. Whether it's venting about work-related stress, discussing marital issues, or simply seeking a listening ear, having someone who understands and supports you can alleviate emotional burdens.

  2. Objective perspective: Friends and family can offer a fresh and objective viewpoint on your situation. They can provide insights that you might not have considered, helping you gain new perspectives and alternative solutions to problems. Sometimes, an outsider's opinion can offer valuable clarity when you feel stuck or overwhelmed.

  3. Professional guidance: Seeking support from a professional counselor or therapist can be particularly helpful in addressing complex marital and personal challenges. These professionals are trained to provide non-judgmental, unbiased support and guidance. They can help you explore underlying issues, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and offer tools and strategies to improve your relationships and overall well-being.

  4. Strengthening relationships: Seeking support doesn't just benefit you; it also strengthens your relationships with those you confide in. Sharing your struggles and seeking advice from loved ones shows that you trust and value their input. It fosters a deeper sense of connection, mutual support, and understanding within your social circle.

  5. Problem-solving and stress reduction: Engaging in open and honest conversations about your life and marriage can lead to problem-solving and stress reduction. Talking through challenges with someone can help you identify solutions, brainstorm ideas, and make informed decisions. It can also provide a sense of relief and reassurance, knowing that you're not alone in your struggles.

  6. Learning from others' experiences: When you seek support, you have an opportunity to learn from others' experiences and gain wisdom from their perspectives. Friends and family who have gone through similar situations can share their insights, offer advice, and provide encouragement based on their own journeys. Their stories and lessons can provide valuable guidance and inspiration.

For over 15 years, Jay and I and another couple have been gathering once a week, affectionately referring to it as "therapy".. It has become a cherished tradition filled with hors d'oeuvres, a glass of wine, and meaningful conversations about our lives.

During these gatherings, we open up and discuss the ups and downs we've experienced throughout the week. It's incredible how much we learn from one another's life experiences. We share our triumphs, our challenges, and everything in between, providing each other with valuable insights and perspectives.

Remember, seeking support is not a sign of weakness but a demonstration of strength and self-awareness. It takes courage to acknowledge that you need assistance and to reach out for help. Whether it's through a heart-to-heart conversation with a loved one or by seeking professional counseling, you are taking an active step towards self-improvement, personal growth, and cultivating healthier relationships.
